Langa Indoor Sports Centre temporarily closed
27 August 2023
The City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department has temporarily closed the Langa Indoor Sports Centre on Bhunga Avenue for repairs to its roof.
Access to the facility will not be allowed until the repairs have been made and the venue deemed safe for use.
The facility roof sheets were damaged last month due to heavy rain and high winds.
The roof sheets replacement was logged for emergency repairs, but continued strong winds and rain further exacerbated the destruction, resulting in additional damage and the need for structural engineer assistance.

'The Langa Indoor Sports Centre is one of the most popular recreational amenities in the city and it is important to ensure that it is well maintained and safe for all. The repairs are required to ensure the safety of all users,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.
Structural engineers with facility staff conducted a site inspection earlier this month in order to assess the condition of the existing building, particularly the affected roof, and to discuss potential alterations and remedial measures.
The findings include the western façade projecting beam portion and missing roof sheets, dislodged fixing rails from purlins and compromised waterproofing resulting in water damage to the north walls both internal and external faces.

Due to partial roof cover and compromised structural resistance to wind loads, the integrity of the remainder of the roof sheeting cannot be guaranteed.
Consequently, the engineer recommends that the facility be closed for public use since it is not safe to use, thus temporarily discontinuing all programmes and events at this facility.
‘We will do our best to accommodate bookings at alternative facilities during this time and try to complete the work as soon as possible. We ask the community to bear with us as we restore this well-loved and well-used facility,’ said Councillor Van der Ross.

Alternative City venues in Langa include Langa Hall located at the corner of Church Street and Washington Street and Monwabisi Recreation Centre at the corner of Brinton Avenue and Mendi Avenue.

Phase 1: As a precaution against further damage to the roof structure, as well as the interior structure and finishes, temporary sheeting will be installed by a roofing specialist to reduce the risk of water intrusion to the building and secure the roof against wind. This remedial work will serve as a short-term solution.
Phase 2: An additional assessment will be undertaken to identify further defects and remedial measures.
Timelines for the work to be carried out are yet to be determined.
